AETOS◊ Shoulder System
The AETOS Shoulder System is an implant system for shoulder replacement surgery. It’s designed to relieve your pain and restore your shoulder function.
Shoulder Replacement
If you’re thinking about shoulder replacement, you’re not alone. More than 100,000 people in the U.S. have shoulder replacement each year.1 Reasons for shoulder replacement include:
- Arthritis
- Trauma or fracture
- Rotator cuff tears
AETOS Shoulder System
In shoulder replacement surgery, the damaged parts of your shoulder are removed and replaced with new components. The AETOS Shoulder System provides the surgeon with components for the procedure. The AETOS Shoulder System is designed to:2,3
- Preserve your natural bone
- Provide stability in your shoulder
- Offer your surgeon a range of components to better customize your replacement
Types of Procedures
There are two main types of shoulder replacement, both possible with the AETOS Shoulder System:
-
Anatomic total shoulder replacement – In this procedure, the ball and socket of the joint are replaced. A metal stem is inserted at the top of the arm bone, and a metal head is attached to serve as the new ball. Also, a plastic component is inserted in the shoulder blade to serve as the new socket.
-
Reverse shoulder replacement – In this procedure, the ball and socket are replaced, and the structure is reversed. A new ball is attached to the shoulder blade. A new socket is attached to the top of the arm bone. This reverse procedure is often done when the rotator cuff is damaged and the joint requires support from other muscles.
Surgery and Recovery
Shoulder replacement surgery usually lasts 1 to 2 hours. Physical therapy often begins the day after the surgery and is an important part of the recovery process.
Because each patient is unique, the recovery timeline varies from person to person. Ask your surgeon what you can expect for your specific situation.
